Botox® and Dysport® Procedures

Botox® and Dysport® are FDA approved safe and reliable botulinum toxin products that have been used for many years for medical conditions not related to aging.  More recently, however, Botox® and Dysport®, have been used safely to minimize evidence of facial aging by eliminating facial lines and wrinkles .  This treatment is best used for wrinkles associated with facial animation, rather than deep permanent skin wrinkling (where Fillers are better).  Facial expression is produced by the muscles under the skin of the face.  Over time, our facial expressions gradually create wrinkles that deepen as we age.  Botox® and Dysport® paralyze these facial muscles thereby inhibiting certain facial expressions and reducing wrinkles.  Starting Botox® and Dysport® therapy at a younger age will prevent the development of these “animation lines” over time.

General Procedure:

Botox® and Dysport® are injected most commonly around the eyes, between the brows, and over the forehead.  The process is done in the office and takes about 20 minutes to perform.  The effects of Botox® and Dysport® can last between 3 to 5 months. Swelling and bruising are rare, but can occur.  The resulting reduction in wrinkles takes approximately 5 to 7 days for the patient to notice the difference.  Patients are encouraged to come back to the office one week after injection to assess the effectiveness and apply a “touch-up” as needed to correct any possible but rare asymmetries.

Recovery Process:

The recovery time for Botox® and Dysport® injections is minimal.  Most patients return to work immediately.  There are no post-injection limitations on activity or showering, we simply ask that you do not exercise the night after the treatment.
